Tallis Wood

Roundhouse surrounded by trees

Welcome to our beautiful woodland

Tallis Wood was planted in the Winter of 2005/6, when Caz was pregnant with her and Tom’s first daughter. It seemed only right to name the woodland after her, being as she was quite a part of its beginnings! ‘Tallis’ comes from the renowned Welsh bard, Taliesin, whose name means “shining brow”, in French, the word ‘tailleis’ translates as ‘coppice’, and we took our inspiration from the name of the main character in Lavondyss, the second book in the award winning Mythago Wood series.

Initially funded by The Forestry Commission, and set over 10 acres, Tallis Wood is a mixed broadleaf woodland, planted with native species, including oak, hazel, willow, aspen, birch, hawthorn, alder, cherry and many more. Over a number of public planting days, a truly wonderful array of local people helped us plant over 5,000 trees in just a few weeks. It was our first true experience of ‘community coming together’ and inspired us for what else becomes possible when likeminded folk combine forces for the common good.

Tallis Wood today is a space where people gather for all sorts of different reasons. Whether it’s for adult wellbeing courses, Forest School sessions, women and men’s circles, mindfulness workshops, yoga classes, or simply a social get-together around a fire with friends, Tallis Wood is a welcoming place for all.
